What Proof Is There That “I Care” Works?

  • A 2011 “I Care” School Research Study shows increases in student achievement in Math and English.
  • Two doctoral dissertations found increases in reading and overall student achievement.
  • One of the strengths of “I Care” is the ability to measure parent engagement. Following is an example of how parent engagement improves during the school year using the “I Care” system.

  • Over and over, principals report an increase in end-of-year test scores and attendance, along with a decrease in office referrals beginning with the year that “I Care” is introduced into the class or school.
  • Some of the most powerful data is anecdotal:
    • One five-year-old walks around with his workbook saying, “When is it time for ‘I Care’?”
    • A teacher went out and bought her own incentives when her allotment ran out because she was seeing such transformation with “I Care” and wanted to keep up the momentum.
    • Kids throughout the district are wearing their “I Care” T-shirts two or three times a week instead of just on “‘I Care’ Day.”
    • Migrant parents are coming to school for the first time.
    • A teenage reminded his mom, “You’re supposed to say positive things.”
    • With tears in her eyes, a mother shared that getting the positive contact each month was the first time she’d heard anything good about her child.
